We boarded the ferry for the Alcatraz tour at 9:30 after a 45 minute walk from our apartment. We spent a good 3 hours or so on the island. The audio tour is pretty cool because you do it at your own speed. Here are a few of the pictures from our tour. The rest can be found at our Shutterfly page (click on the link over on the right side). It was a dreary, foggy day so most of the pictures are pretty blah.
We got lucky and the day we went to Alcatraz they had a former inmate and former guard speaking. We got even luckier and got our picture taken with them. The gentleman on the right was a former guard, George Devincenzi. The gentleman on the left was the former inmate. His name is Robert Luke, or #1118AZ as they were all referred to as a number, and the AZ stands for Alcatraz. It was pretty incredible listening to them speak about their experiences, especially Luke. When he was released from Alcatraz he kept that a secret from lots of family and friends. Only recently when he started returning to the prison and talking in front of a crowd did he tell most people.
Of course we had to take pictures from inside the cells.
The boat ride to and from the island was pretty chilly.
It was a long day with more activities to write about, but they will have to wait.
